Taking only minutes to get a result, the test can be performed in the privacy of your home in a few simple steps. All necessary components are provided within the kit and taking a sample is achieved with a simple mouth swab – no blood sample required.
When the body encounters harmful bacteria or viruses, the immune system responds by producing specific antibodies. This test will detect antibodies produced by the body in response to the two HIV strains, HIV-1 and HIV-2.

WHY TEST FOR HIV?
HIV is treatable. The sooner you know your status, the sooner you can begin treatment, stay healthy and avoid passing the virus to others. But these steps can only be taken once your status is known and the only way to know, is to test.
When Should I Test?
Within 3 months after possible exposure, and every 3 months afterwards as precaution. The test detects antibodies produced by the body in response to the HIV virus and not the virus itself. Therefore, the test should not be used immediately after a risk event. You can use the test 4 weeks after possible exposure, but not everyone will have produced antibodies within this time, so you must not rely on a negative result until you have tested 3 months after possible exposure. This is because everybody produces antibodies at different rates, and it can take the body up to 3 months to produce these antibodies at levels that can be detected by the test. This is known as the ‘test window period’.
Always consult an appropriate medical professional following a positive result or if you are concerned about your sexual health.

Interpreting Results
Interpreting results is straightforward. POSITIVE: The presence of a control (C) line, even if the line is faint, and a test (T) line is a positive result and means you might be HIV positive.
NEGATIVE: If the control (C) line only appears it means your result is negative. However, it is advised test regularly if you think you have been exposed to the HIV virus. Test again in 3 months.

HIV Symptoms and Information
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that effects the cells within your immune system, reducing the bodies’ ability to combat everyday infections and diseases.
AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is the name that describes several potentially serious infections and illnesses that result from a damaged immune system caused by the HIV virus.
It is not possible to transmit AIDS from one person to another, but it is possible to transmit the HIV virus. The virus is transmitted via body fluids of an infected person. This includes blood, semen, vaginal & anal fluids, and breast milk.
HIV Symptoms
Once infected, approximately 80% of people will develop flu like symptoms approx. 2- 6 weeks after infection. These symptoms generally persist for 2 weeks.
Common symptoms include:
- Raised temperature (fever)
- Sore throat
- Body rash
Other potential symptoms:
- Tiredness
- Joint pain
- Muscle pain
- Swollen glands
After this, the symptoms disappear and it is possible to not experience any other symptoms for many years. As a result, many people with HIV don’t realise they are infected. However, even in the absence of symptoms the virus continues to damage the immune system and can of course be transmitted to others.

Although there is currently no cure for HIV, HIV is now a completely treatable condition, allowing many people with the virus to live long and healthy lives. The medicines used to treat HIV are known as Antiretroviral treatments and these work by preventing the virus from replicating within the body, preventing any further damage, and giving the immune system an opportunity to repair.
The aim of the treatment is to reduce the viral load to an undetectable level. Science now widely supports the notion that undetectable (for at least six months) means untransmissible or U=U for short.
