Abingdon Simply Test Fertility Bundle – Sperm Count and Ovulation Tests
According to the NHS website, approximately 1 in 7 couples in the UK struggle to conceive. Struggling to fall pregnant can occur for a number of reasons relating to both male and female fertility. Therefore, the Abingdon Simply Test Fertility Bundle is designed to give couples insight into two particular barriers to falling pregnant; sperm count and the timing of sexual intercourse.
It only takes one sperm to fertilise an egg but in natural conception you need millions to be in with a chance. Sperm can survive in the body for up to 5 days. Therefore, having the right amount of sperm and having intercourse during the days leading up to ovulation or on high/peak fertility days improve your chances of getting pregnant.
All components are provided to use the tests. Clear instructions guide you through the testing process.
These self tests are manufactured under internationally recognised quality management system, ISO 13485
Frequently Asked Questions
WHY TEST FOR LUTEINIZING HORMONE (LH)?
Before ovulation starts the body produces Luteinizing Hormone or LH which then triggers the release of an egg from an ovary. Therefore, testing for LH removes some of the guesswork when trying to predict when is best to try for a baby.
WHAT IS ACROSOMAL PROTEIN SP-10 AND WHY TEST FOR IT?
Acrosomal Protein SP-10 is protein found on the surface membranes of sperm in human semen. SP-10 is specific to male germ cells (spermatocytes) and cannot be found in other cells. Therefore, detecting SP-10 within the detection limits specified helps to interpret male fertility or infertility.
When Should We Test?
A man can perform the sperm test at any time. For the ovulation test, within the test’s instructions, there is a guide on when to test depending on the length of your menstrual cycle. Once the menstrual cycle is determined the guide will indicate when after the start of your period you should test your urine. 5 tests are provided so you can test over a few days.
Accuracy
Sperm Test
This SP-10 test detects the Acrosomal Protein SP-10 at 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen (or above), which is in line with international guidelines for determining low or normal sperm count.
Ovulation Test
The test detect LH in urine at concentration of 40mlU/mL or higher. A clinical trial using 300 urine samples produced a sensitivity and specificity of >99.9% when compared with other similar commercially available products.
Interpreting Results
Sperm Test
The presence of a test (T) line and control (C) line shows a normal level of SP-10. A control (C) line on its own suggests abnormal levels. Sperm concentration analysis is one of several solutions to determining a couple’s fertility. Consult a doctor following a negative test or if you have have any family planning or fertility questions.
Ovulation Test
When a test (T) line appears alongside the control (C) line, this confirms the presence of Luteinizing Hormone in your urine. Ovulation may start within 24-36 hours. If a control (C) line only appears, LH is not present in your urine at a sufficient level. If your menstrual cycle calculations are correct and you continue get negative results, consult a doctor. Your doctor will also offer pregnancy and family planning advice.
